Medicinal Cannabis in Georgia Explained

January 18th, 2023|

Medicinal Cannabis is coming to Georgia, but what does this mean for you?

Georgia will legalize medicinal cannabis in the form of THC oil with up to 5% THC; this will be implemented in the spring of 2023. To be able to obtain this newly legalized form of medicinal cannabis you must register and be approved for a Low-THC Oil registry card. This card will be requested through a doctor/physician. Low-THC Oil registry cards are only available to either an adult suffering from one or more of the illnesses described in the law, or the legal guardians of a child or adult suffering from one or more of the outlined illnesses. The illnesses that qualify for the Low-THC Oil registry card are:

  • Cancer, when such diagnosis is end stage or the treatment produces related wasting illness or recalcitrant nausea and vomiting
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
  • Seizure disorders related to diagnosis of epilepsy or trauma related head injuries
  • Multiple sclerosis, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Mitochondrial disease
  • Parkinson’s disease, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
  • Sickle cell disease, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
  • Tourette’s syndrome, when such syndrome is diagnosed as severe
  • Autism spectrum disorder, when (a) patient is 18 years of age or more, or (b) patient is less than 18 years of age and diagnosed with severe autism
  • Epidermolysis bullosa
  • Alzheimer’s disease, when such disease is severe or end stage
  • AIDS when such syndrome is severe or end stage
  • Peripheral neuropathy, when symptoms are severe or end stage
  • Patient is in hospice program, either as inpatient or outpatient
  • Intractable pain
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from direct exposure to or witnessing of a trauma for a patient who is at least 18 years of age

For a doctor or physician to be able to register a patient for the Low-THC Oil registry they themselves must first register with the Georgia Department of Public Health. The registry process is simple and after which they will be able to easily add interested patients to the Low-THC Oil registry for the state of Georgia.
